New Movie Is Looking to Cast a Teen With Disabilities

On Thursday, film production company Lionsgate announced it is looking for young stars between ages 14-18 for its new movie, "White Bird: A Wonder Story." The call for actors, which was posted on Instagram and open to everyone, includes a male character who uses crutches due to a childhood illness.

People with disabilities make up about 25% of the U.S. population, yet only about 3% of characters on film have a disability. In addition, characters with a disability are played by actors without disabilities 95% of the time.

The new casting call for "White Bird" offers the chance for authentic disability representation.
