"Hi there. My name is Jennifer Burgmann and my pronouns are she/her. I live in British Columbia, Canada and I am a Mighty Super Contributor."
"I feel like I’ve grown more in the last 10 years since becoming disabled than I did in the 40 years prior and I want to share those experiences and that growth so I can support and encourage and sometimes just commiserate with others sharing similar struggles."
My favorite story I've written for The Mighty...
"This is not just a personal issue, it is a societal one. I'm truly hoping stories like this will start real conversations to create change in the way our society treats its elders."
"Why I'm Afraid of Aging With a Disability"
She whistles the lyrics to songs (since she can no longer sing), has a university degree in theater and has a red belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Jennifer says, "My body is unable to do it anymore, but it still remembers how!"
"The best advice I have for people living with disability later in life is to allow yourself time to mourn the abilities and identity you had before you were disabled so that you can clear a path to embrace and adapt to a new life still filled with possibilities and opportunities."
Thanks to Jennifer, and contributors like her, our Mighty community is what it is.
Thanks for sharing your story, Jennifer!
